Welcome to the first post under the “Life giving home” section of the blog!
I have always had a desire to share some of my tips, thoughts and ideas when it comes to the home, and so I am quite excited to introduce this on the blog.
One of the beautiful opportunities that I have as a wife, is being able to creatively foster and cultivate beauty, and turn a house into a home. In this post I’ll be talking about the importance of filling our homes with beautiful fragrances, the inexpensive, cost effective ways to do so, some of my favourite ways to fill my own home with beautiful scents, and how the most important fragrance of all-Christ must permeate every area of our homes.
There is something so pleasant about walking into a space, and being surrounded by a scent of cleanliness, light and fragrance. Scent is very personal to each of us, whether we realise it or not. Have you ever come across a whiff of something that instantly takes you back to an old fond memory?
So powerful is an aroma, that we may often find ourselves attaching memories and associating people and places with certain scents. We even wear perfumes and colognes as an expression of our personalities, and I believe that this can also be applied in our home.
I tend to gravitate toward candles a lot, and enjoy the fragrant scents of flowers in bloom, as well as diffusor sets to fill my home with a sweet, warm aroma. Before I married, I developed a habit of purchasing candles and using them during my time of reading and journaling as I found that they helped create a calm and peaceful environment.
It has been said that some fragrances have associations with different effects in the brain and body; for example lavender is helpful for rest and calming the nerves, cinnamon for fatigue and exhaustion, and fruity scents for brightening one’s mood as well as increasing concentration.
What I love most about fragrances, as strange as it may sound, is that they bring life into the air, contributing to an environment feeling comfortable, calm and beautiful- an oasis of wellbeing. Scents can really play a big part in influencing our daily emotions, and productivity levels.
Some of the ways that I like to add fragrance in different areas of my home in an inexpensive way is by using:
*tip* If you purchase them at the beginning or end of the week (or day) from the supermarket there are many usually at a 50% discount.
As much as I love and appreciate beautiful scents in my environment, friend I realise that as disciples of Christ, we must desire an even more lovely fragrance in our home- and that fragrance is Christ and His work in our inner and outward lives. Without this Christ like fragrance, no amount of outward adornment could make a home, and even our different relationships within our homes beautiful.
Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. (2 Corinthians 2:14-16)
In this scripture passage, Paul is reminding the Corinthian believers that they are to be Christ like in all that they do, as this emits the fragrance of Christ to other believers as well as unbelievers. This fragrance will be perceived differently by both groups, but nevertheless we must still emit the fragrance of Christ. I wonder, what aroma we carry around with us as we encounter different people in different ways, and seek to culivate Godliness within our homes and among family. Do we leave a stench of back biting, jealousy, anger, competitiveness, insecurity or a fragrance of humility, love, servitude, maturity and grace?
Our Christ like fragrance cannot be purchased in the shops as we do our favourite perfumes and candles. Rather, the fragrance we bear, and the fragrance that follows us is the fruit born from intimacy, and not just any kind of intimacy, but intentional, intense, concentrated and penetrating intimacy with Jesus. Where all of Christ is poured into us, and the overflow is seen and felt by others.
Consider the time you spend with someone you are close to. We tend to pick up their characteristics and begin to talk and act like them. Dear friend, I have come to realise that when we spend time with the Lord, and He helps us to deal with some of our root issues, we are healed and His fragrance and scent rubs off on us. We cannot help but spread it everywhere we go.
Just as Moses’s face shone with glory due to his time spent with the Lord, the fragrance of Christ pours out of us, follows us, spreads around us and fills the spaces that we enter and people that we encounter. I write from a place of complete humility because this is an area that I myself need much cultivation in.
Christ’s atoning blood grants us unrestrained access to the throne of grace of our heavenly Father. Therefore, we must desire to become women of the inner sanctuary.
True beauty is born from the place of intimacy with Christ.
When I think about Christ, I think about how His fragrance was and still is unmistakable. The fragrance of a love that cannot be fully comprehended followed Him everywhere He went. It was in His very nature and defined who He was.
Wherever Jesus went, whatever He did and said, the precious fragrance of another spiritual world, that wasn’t like this world followed Him and permeated the hearts of those that encountered Him. People wondered who this man was and they marveled at His depth of wisdom and life priorities.
However, not everyone welcomed this fragrance with joy and delight, and many mocked, persecuted, harassed and ridiculed Him. Still His fragrance did not fade- if anything its scent intensified when under pressure.
It is difficult to measure fragrance. It is a matter of quality and not of quantity. A little squirt of a strong scent can last for days because of the high concentration levels of ingredients. Likewise, a large squirt of a fragrance can last just for one hour because the quality of ingredients is poor.
What fragrance do you leave in the places you go?
Our Christ like fragrance can only have longevity when concentration is high- because of our close relatedness to Christ. As women, we can leave a beautiful lingering fragrance of wisdom, gentlessess, meekness, boldness, courage among many other things!
I pray that as we seek to make our environments and homes more physically beautiful, we first seek this within ourselves by allowing Christ to be Lord over our hearts as we abide in Him.
Praying for God’s best for you.
