PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION

PROGRESS NOT PERFECTION

Progress, not perfection... A popular quote which really does ring true in our lives.

Recently I have been feeling quite overwhelmed with the number of things that I need to do before the end of the year- and we are only in February!

Many of us have goals that we aim to reach by mid or end of the year. It may be to challenge ourselves to do something new, to step out of our comfort zone, save more money, commit more to our spiritual growth, break an old bad habit or be successful in our careers and vocations.

If you are anything like me, you may struggle to sometimes find balance in appreciating the progress in your life and actually getting things successfully ticked off your list.

I am a massive overachiever (you can read about it here) and while this is fine, I very quickly (and often) fall into an unhealthy space of overlooking my steps of progress- (no matter how small it is) to only see the huge finished picture in front of me. I expect perfection, and nothing less.

Talk about placing a huge and unrealistic burden on myself!

Recently I was reminded again that when it comes to my spiritual walk or any other goal in fact, I must constantly remind myself that I am on a journey; conforming and becoming. There is no finish line really on this side of heaven- just constant progress if I am willing to stay the course with Christ.

If you are in a similar space to me, I would encourage you to release the weights of perfection that tie you down to unrealistic expectations for yourself.

One by one.

Because lady, you are also on a journey… Conforming and becoming. Remember; progress, not perfection. Growth and maturity must come through progress, and there is a richness and depth that is added to our lives when we release our lofty expectations to God and allow Him to do the rearranging and moulding. He is more than capable.

I am reminded of Philippians 1:6

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.

What a beautiful and reassuring promise.

He quietly and deeply begins the work within us.

He continues the work within us.

He finishes the work within us.

The mechanics of our progression rest in His hands, and when we keep our eyes on Him, we will be sure to see Him at work in our lives.
